Courbis upbeat despite Saint-Etienne defeat

Montpellier coach Rolland Courbis is remaining upbeat despite the club s dismal run of form.

Courbis last week returned to the Stade de la Mosson for a second stint in charge of Montpellier following Jean Fernandez s resignation.

However, the 60-year-old could not inspire the 2011-12 Ligue 1 champions to victory over Saint-Etienne, who claimed a 1-0 victory thanks to a second-half strike from Max Gradel.

Courbis remains hopeful that Montpellier, following a run of nine league games without a win, can turn things around.

Let s stay positive, he said.

I am not in the habit of being easily discouraged.

We will move quickly into 2014 to see what improvements we can make.

I note a lot of nervousness, shyness (within the team), it is logical.

I …

Huddlestone ´masterclass´ delights Bruce

Boss Steve Bruce hailed birthday boy Tom Huddlestone s masterclass in Hull City s 6-0 Premier League win over Fulham.

The midfielder starred as the hosts completed their biggest Premier League win, with a second-half goal spree to see off their struggling visitors.

Huddlestone who turned 27 on Saturday hit the post with a free-kick in the first half before the flood gates opened early in the second period, with Ahmed Elmohamady breaking the deadlock after 49 minutes.

Hull were 4-0 up by the 68th minute as Robert Koren, George Boyd and Huddlestone all found the net, while Matty Fryatt added a fifth a few minutes later.

Koren added his second in the closing stages to set the seal on the emphatic win, but it was Huddlestone who earned special praise from the manager…

Nari´s ban increased to 18 months after appeal

Former Manchester City midfielder Samir Nasri has had his suspension for violating UEFA s anti-doping regulations increased from six to 18 months.

Nasri was originally banned for six months after he received a drip treatment at a Los Angeles clinic in 2016, which UEFA said contravened rules laid down by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA).

But an appeal against the initial sanction by UEFA s ethics and disciplinary inspector has resulted in an extended suspension, announced on Wednesday.

The ban is backdated to July 1 2017 and while Nasri made eight appearances for Turkish side Antalyaspor during that time, the 31-year-old free agent can return to training in November.

A statement from UEFA read: The UEFA Control, Ethics and Disciplinary Body s decision o…

Sanchez always seemed a ´sad man´ at Manchester United – Mourinho

Jose Mourinho claims Alexis Sanchez flopped at Manchester United because he was a sad man , but has backed the Chilean to reignite his love for football at Inter.

Sanchez joined the Italian club on an initial season-long loan deal two weeks ago after struggling for form and fitness during his 18 months at Old Trafford.

Much was expected of the Chile international following his switch from Arsenal in January 2018, but he managed just three goals in 32 Premier League appearances.

Mourinho was in charge of United at the time of Sanchez s arrival and is willing to accept some of the blame for the ex-Barcelona forward s lack of impact.

Germany´s Kuranyi overlooked for World Cup

Germany coach Joachim Loew said Monday that Schalke striker Kevin Kuranyi, one of the Bundesliga s top scorers this season, will not be in the World Cup squad to be unveiled later this week.

After full consideration in the training team we came to the conclusion that we have other ideas for the make-up of our World Cup team, both tactically and when it comes to personnel, Loew said.

I said this quite openly to Kevin.

Kuranyi, 28, who has played 52 times for Germany, has had the best season of his career, scoring 18 goals with Schalke, who are second in the Bundesliga, three points behind Bayern Munich with one game to play.

He has not played for Germany since storming out on the team in October 2008 after being left out of the matchday squad for a Wor…

Brandao keen to impress Dunga

(GSM) Brazilian striker Brandao is aiming to continue his fine form for Olmypique Marseille against Valenciennes on Sunday as he is keen on impressing national coach Dunga.

OM were five minutes away from going out of the Coupe de la Ligue to Toulouse on Wednesday before the Brazilian s dramatic double, the second in extra-time, secured their place in the final.

The 29-year-old forward is now intent on firing Didier Deschamps side back into the Ligue 1 title hunt, and in doing so hopes to catch the eye of Dunga.

That is my life s dream, he said on www.om.net about his desire to play for the Selecao.

The first thing is that I succeed with my goals here in Marseille, playing good matches and winning a title. I hope then that Dunga will see my work.

Simeone urges Copa del Rey focus from Atletico

Diego Simeone insists Atletico Madrid will be on their guard against a Copa del Rey upset when they host Reus Deportiu on Thursday.

Atleti hold a slender 2-1 aggregate lead over their third-tier opponents, having fallen behind in the first leg before being bailed out by goals from Luciano Vietto and Saul Niguez.

Simeone is likely to rotate his starting XI as he aims to extend an eight-match winning streak across all competitions that has helped to bring the 2013-14 Liga champions level on points with Barcelona at the summit of the Spanish top flight.

But the Argentinian has urged his players to turn in a fully committed performance against Reus, citing the first leg as a warning the 10-time winners must heed.

We ll go with everything we have, as always…

Southampton v Arsenal: Wenger calls for Gunners´ focus

Arsene Wenger has warned Arsenal not to let their focus slip when they face out-of-form Southampton in the Premier League on Boxing Day.

Wenger s side travel to St Mary s looking for a fourth successive league victory on Saturday as they look to keep pace with leaders Leicester City.

Arsenal trail Claudio Ranieri s men by two points, while also enjoying a four-point cushion to third-placed Manchester City.

They will hope to at least maintain that points difference against Ronald Koeman s side, who come into the clash with just one point from their last five games courtesy of a 1-1 home draw with bottom club Aston Villa.

I believe for us the most important thing is to focus on ourselves, and not to speculate too much on any weakness of Southampton, Wen…
